SAP – Electronic Bank Statement Processing (EBS)

SAP EBS: MT940 Phase-Out – Format Change Required

As part of the global harmonization of payment traffic, the German banking industry is discontinuing the previously used MT format and transitioning to the international ISO 20022 standard. If you are still using GVCs (Business Transaction Codes) in your electronic bank statement processing, action is required in your SAP system.

What’s Changing?

To align electronic payments with the ISO 20022 international standard, the German banking industry will phase out the MT format. XML-based messaging allows for richer data transmission, providing greater flexibility and information depth. ISO 20022 is set to become the global standard for financial messaging in the coming years.

Which Formats Are Being Discontinued?

SWIFT formats MT940, MT941, and MT942 will be discontinued by November 2025. The old camt.02 version for transaction information will be upgraded to version 08.

What Needs to Be Considered for SAP EBS?

  • Identify banks where MT940–MT942 is currently in use
  • Check the technical prerequisites in your SAP system – implementing OSS Notes (formats and transformations) may be necessary
  • Map existing GVCs (Business Transaction Codes) to the new BTCs and assign appropriate posting rules
  • Customize ELKO settings and define search patterns for BTCs
  • Perform extensive testing in your SAP system using test files from your banks in the camt.08 format

We recommend starting the transition now.
