AI agents in companies are increasingly taking on operational tasks, analyzing data, and helping employees make informed decisions. In the SAP environment, this vision of the future is often discussed under the term \u201cAutonomous Enterprise.\u201d But what does it really entail?<\/p>\n

“Autonomous Enterprise” does not mean running a business without people. Rather, AI agents help employees streamline processes and make more informed decisions.<\/p>\n

What does “Autonomous Enterprise” actually mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cAutonomous Enterprise\u201d arguably the most frequently used term currently appearing in SAP marketing. And as is often the case with new technological paradigms, the question quickly arises: Is this just the next buzzword? Or does it represent a genuine step forward for businesses?<\/p>\n

Our assessment at XEPTUM:
\nThe term may sound new but the potential behind it is very real.<\/p>\n

After all, the goal isn’t to run businesses entirely without people. The goal is to free people from routine tasks in a targeted way, provide a better basis for decision-making, and support processes more intelligently.<\/p>\n

What role do AI agents play in a company<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and why do humans remain in control?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A helpful comparison is autonomous driving.<\/p>\n

Even in this area, we have not yet reached a point where vehicles can operate fully autonomously at any time, anywhere, and under all conditions. Nevertheless, driver-assistance systems are already providing enormous help: They keep the vehicle in its lane, detect risks, regulate speed, assist with parking, warn of dangerous situations, and enable navigation via voice commands.<\/p>\n

People are still behind the wheel but they’re no longer driving alone.<\/p>\n

This is exactly how the path to the Autonomous Enterprise can be understood. AI agents within the company take on clearly defined tasks, support decision-making, and relieve employees of day-to-day work. Many business processes involve recurring patterns, clear rules, recognizable exceptions, and reproducible decision-making logic. This is precisely where generative AI, agents, and intelligent assistants can already provide highly effective support today.<\/p>\n

They can gather information, verify data, prepare proposals, identify discrepancies, recommend next steps, or take over entire routine tasks.<\/p>\n

Responsibility remains with people. At the same time, processes in increasingly complex business environments can be made more reliable, faster, and more efficient.<\/p>\n

Does this already require a modern SAP system landscape?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Autonomy doesn’t start with a perfect system landscape. Many companies are currently asking themselves:
\n\u201cCan we even use this if our ERP landscape hasn’t yet fully migrated to the latest cloud environment?\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer is: Yes, if the right conditions are in place. After all, AI agents in a company don\u2019t necessarily need the most cutting-edge system infrastructure; what they need most of all is high-quality data, clear processes, and a reliable business context.<\/p>\n

Of course, the latest SAP technologies, SAP Business AI, Joule, and the SAP Business AI Platform, offer exciting possibilities. But the key to success isn’t just the latest release or a fully modernized system landscape.<\/p>\n
