Building Blocks

The SAP environment is ideal for each enterprise, because it can be completely customized to its specific needs. However, tailoring the SAP system to a customer can be time consuming and complicated. To solve this, SAP has responded with its Best Practices and the Building Blocks.

The Best Practices are designed to standardize the business processes, so that new and existing customers can profit from these optimized solutions, and also get upgrades in the future. Think of tax calculations that can be updated through an upgrade.

The Best Practices contain different packages that work on different layers: Baseline, Industry and Cross industry packages. Inside these layers, the different business processes are divided up into Building Blocks. The layering ensure that the basic functionality only needs to be added once, and then on the next layer, interdependent blocks can be added. Each of these Building Blocks contains configuration guide, a process flow, procedure and unit tests. By configuring your ERP with the Building Blocks, you can use only the blocks that you need and hence simplify your business processes.

The Building Blocks are administered using the Solution Builder Tool in Solution Manager. This includes configuration, additions and deletions, etc. There are also complete scenarios for complex business processes, and these can also be customized. The Solution Builder Tool ensures the proper set up of the required master data and does unit testing, to ensure a successful deployment.
